So Put Your Hand to the Plow
Jesus Christ has granted us technological favors. As a younger man I travelled a lot. This allowed me much time to listen to books on cassette tape, later on CD. I cannot tell you how many hours of “reading” I did as I drove. I often paused the tape in order to reflect on something I learned. And sometimes, because of distractions, I would need to rewind and replay.
These days people listen to audiobooks digitally. And the amount of books available is exhaustive. Some still cost money, but many are available online at no charge (especially those books written by godly men of previous centuries). And in some cases employers allow employees to listen to things while they work. Only, you should not do so if this hampers the work you get paid to perform.
God has given us many advantages compared to Christians of the past. Yet we stand where we do because of these Christians and the blessings of Christ’s kingdom. Technology has advanced. The amount of resources has increased. What remains is the need for men who have a heart for God and are willing to put their hand to the plow. (Luke 9:62)
That is a significant amount of books. I have a hard time retaining as much when I listen to the book, rather than when I read it and write in it. I find my mind wonders and the audio book narrator just keeps on reading.
I keep track of the books I read annually, and since audiobooks are so readily accessible, I have gotten in over 100 books a year for the last three years, and 2/3 of those are audio.
